Just do it.

Life is short, have the courage to follow your dreams: with Dr. Sabrina Brennan

Every week I ask my Brave New Girls podcast guest how they define courage. This week’s guest is Dr Sabina Brennan, health psychologist, neuroscientist & bestselling author of the No 1 Bestselling books 100 Days to a Younger Brain & Beating Brain Fog and now the Neuroscience of Manifesting.

She believes that recognising our mortality is essential to finding the courage to change. Understanding that we have only one life to live prompts us to question why we fear change. Often, our fears are tied to concerns about what others might think. This mindset is limiting, preventing personal growth.

As we age, we realise that we have lived more years than we have left. This realisation doesn’t have to be seen as depressing but as a motivator to take action. Life is not a rehearsal; we must seize opportunities and make the most of our time.

According to Dr. Brennan, courage may not be a prerequisite for change. Instead, action itself can drive courage. Echoing the Nike slogan, "Just do it," she encourages us not to overthink but to take decisive steps towards change.

Dr. Brennan’s insights remind us that courage is not an innate trait but a by-product of action and perspective. By understanding that we have a finite amount of time our and by taking proactive steps, we can overcome the fear of change and lead more dynamic, fulfilling lives.

Dare to do things differently, for the greater good.

Ten Actionable Steps for Courageous Change:

  1. Acknowledge Mortality: Understand that life is finite. This awareness can motivate you to make the most of your time and take necessary risks to achieve your goals.

  2. Identify Fears: Reflect on what specifically scares you about change. Often, fears are tied to others' perceptions. Recognising these fears is the first step in overcoming them.

  3. Shift Perspective: View change as an opportunity for growth rather than a threat. This mindset shift can transform fear into excitement and curiosity.

  4. Set Small Goals: Break down larger changes into smaller, manageable steps. This makes the process less overwhelming and more achievable.

  5. Take Immediate Action: Don't wait for the perfect moment or for courage to build. Start with small actions that move you toward your goal.

  6. Embrace Failure: Accept that failure is a part of the learning process. Each setback provides valuable lessons that contribute to future success.

  7. Build a Support System: Surround yourself with positive influences. Supportive friends and mentors can provide encouragement and perspective during challenging times.

  8. Reflect Regularly: Take time to reflect on your progress and experiences. This helps in understanding what works and what needs adjustment.

  9. Celebrate Successes: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. This builds confidence and reinforces the benefits of change.

  10. Stay Curious: Maintain a sense of curiosity about life and your potential. Continuous learning and exploration keep the journey exciting and fulfilling.

Embrace change by recognising life's finiteness and taking proactive steps, inspired by Dr. Sabina Brennan's insights on the Brave New Girls podcast.
