Courage with purpose.

Every week, I ask my Brave New Girls podcast guests how they define courage. This week Sama Trinder, founder of the B-Corp Bingham Riverhouse and Bhuti Wellbeing, defines it as:

"Courage is bravery, but with purpose and an inner strength from the heart. Often the right thing or the good thing is not the mainstream thing, and it takes sticking to principles and truth to survive."

For Sama, courage is not about fighting battles or achieving grand conquests—it is about staying true to what you believe in, even when the odds are stacked against you. It’s about having the resilience to hold your ground in a world that often encourages shortcuts or compromises.

Living Courageously in Everyday Life

Sama’s definition of courage is deeply tied to her personal journey. Taking over the family business at just 22, she learned the hard way that leadership requires not only a vision but also persistence and conviction. The transformation of the Bingham Riverhouse into a B-Corp-certified sanctuary for wellbeing reflects her steadfast commitment to her values.

Sama’s courage was tested repeatedly—whether it was staying grounded during personal and financial crises, redefining the purpose of her business, or pursuing a life rooted in sustainability and spirituality. Her courage comes from the heart, allowing her to prioritize people and the planet over profit, and to create spaces where community and joy can flourish.

But Sama also acknowledges that courage doesn’t come easily. It requires continuous self-work, connection with a higher purpose, and an unwavering belief that doing the right thing is worth the struggle.

How Can We Live With Courage Like Sama?

Living courageously means aligning your life with your core values, even when it’s not the easiest or most popular path. It’s about listening to your inner voice, standing firm in your truth, and being brave enough to make choices that resonate with your heart. Courage is not the absence of fear, but the presence of determination to move forward despite it.

Sama’s journey teaches us that courage is a practice. It grows stronger the more we nurture it through small, consistent acts of bravery. Whether it’s pursuing a dream, speaking up for what you believe in, or showing kindness in the face of adversity, courage begins in the heart.

Ten Actionable Steps to Build and Live With Courage

  1. Define Your Values: Reflect on what truly matters to you and let these values guide your decisions.

  2. Take Small Risks Daily: Challenge yourself with small, manageable acts of bravery to build your courage muscle.

  3. Embrace Vulnerability: Acknowledge your fears and face them openly; courage often lies in vulnerability.

  4. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself when you stumble; courage is a journey, not a perfect state.

  5. Surround Yourself with Support: Build a community that encourages and uplifts you when the going gets tough.

  6. Stay True to Your Principles: Resist societal pressure to conform if it conflicts with your beliefs.

  7. Seek Inspiration: Learn from courageous individuals who embody values and actions you admire.

  8. Take Breaks to Reflect: Regularly pause to assess your actions and ensure they align with your heart and values.

  9. Celebrate Wins, Big or Small: Acknowledge and reward yourself for acts of courage, no matter how small.

  10. Practice Daily Gratitude: Focus on what you have and the steps you’ve taken, reinforcing a positive mindset.

Sama Trinder’s journey reveals that courage is not about being fearless but about having the heart to pursue truth, resilience, and purpose. By sticking to our values and taking brave steps every day, we can live courageously and inspire others to do the same.
